Old Calhoun County Courthouse in Blountstown

Blountstown was named in honor of John Blount, a Seminole Indian Chief in the early 1800's. Blount served as guide for General Andrew Jackson when Jackson invaded what was then Spanish Florida in 1818. What was learned during that invasion was enough to cause the United States to purchase Florida from Spain and the territory became part of the US in 1821. Then Jackson turned to removing the Seminoles from Florida and resettling them in Oklahoma... That led to several Seminole Wars and even when those were over, not all the Seminoles were rounded up and moved.
